EUR/USD opened lower in New York and extended those losses to 1.2568 after the sharpest one-month fall in the ISM manufacturing survey since the aftermath of September 11 attacks in 2001.
Traders were expecting a soft number but no one anticipated a drop below the 50 reading. The drop in EUR/USD was limited by expectations that soft US data will inspire the Fed to fire up the printing presses at the August FOMC meeting. A poor unemployment report on Friday will virtually guarantee such an eventuality.

- The Finnish government announced that Finland and the Netherlands are opposed to ESM bond buying in the secondary
markets. While further details were not forthcoming, it provides further evidence of hostility from northern Europe, one
of the key hurdles for major policy breakthroughs in the Eurozone.
- ECB Executive Board member Asmussen suggested that the new Greek government's first priority must be to get the EU's bailout programme back on track. He noted that Greece is already behind schedule, as policy implementation has 'virtually stalled' in the last four months.
- Asmussen ruled out the possibility of achieving any 'once and for all' solution to the complex Eurozone crisis, saying
that the immediate task for EU leaders is to send a clear message that they have understood the design flaws and have a
plan to correct them.
- Greece received the EUR1 bn that was remaining of the EU’s last bailout tranche.
- The German constitutional court said it will look into the complaints against the ESM bailout fund on July 10 - a day after the Eurozone finance ministers are due to meet. The German President earlier noted that he would wait for the
court's ruling before signing off on the ESM treaty.
- The manufacturing PMIs for Germany, France and Italy were soft in June at 45.0, 45.2 and 44.6 respectively. The Eurozone PMI rose slightly to 45.1 in June from 44.8 in May.

- The Nikkei newspaper reported that M&A activity by Japanese corporates has hit record levels. In the first six months of this year, 262 deals were done, surpassing the previous record of 247 seen in 1990. The amounts involved for the first half of this year totaled JPY 3.49 trn.

- The RBA kept the policy rate unchanged, noting that the stance of monetary policy was 'appropriate'. Our Australian economics team notes that the central bank's easing bias has been watered down substantially. For example, the policy text observes that GDP growth is 'somewhat stronger than had been earlier indicated', and labour market conditions have
firmed 'a little'. Nevertheless our economists stick to their view that one more rate cut is in the pipeline, and this will most likely be delivered in August shortly after the Q2 inflation report is released on July 25.
- Building approvals hit a 30 year high at +27.3% m/m suggesting previous RBA easing is already having an impact.
