EUROZONE: Jennifer Lee of BMO Capital Markets notes that Malta has taken umbrage
at being compared to Cyprus. Malta's central bank governor stressed not to make
comparisons, given that its banking sector was also huge. "Malta's banking
sector is eight times the size of its economy, which is similar to Cyprus;
However, this includes foreign banks that have substantial assets outside of
Malta," she says. "However, Malta's domestic banks have assets which are
reportedly about 300% of GDP, which they believe is a 'normal' share," Lee says.
In comparison, Canadian and U.S. bank assets are roughly 110% and 80%,
respectively, of GDP, she adds.
