EUROPE: Greece is asking for more time and not for more money, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras tells German daily Bild Zeitung in an interview published Wednesday shortly before his visit to Berlin. "Let me be very clear: We are not asking for additional money. We stick to our commitments and to meeting all requirements [of the bailout program]," Samaras says.

EURO-DOLLAR: Backs away from the $1.24849 high print for current trade around $1.2470, the pair, for all the noise, still stuck in a half cent range on the day! One trader says of the earlier Fed chatter; "Of course the Fed is discussing their options, it's their job!" Reminds that discussing and implementing further QE are two separate matters. Euro remains contained by the reported strong supply ahead of $1.2500 and notable that this last stall out did not bring talk of semi-official or Dutch name sales, as were seen earlier.

EMERGING MARKETS: Barclays Capital strategists address the growing demand for so called "safe assets" by reserve managers in emerging market economies. "Even though we project EM reserve assets to grow more slowly in the next 10 years than in the past 15, we expect growth for 'safe haven' assets to remain high relative to growth in supply of such assets, mainly because the existing suppliers of 'safe-haven' assets are slow- growing advanced economies, while faster growing EM economies are heavy demanders of the assets." The "past year's stagnation" in China's reserve accumulation should be redflagged, they note. If this trend continues, "it would have a material effect on our long-run projections (for continued, albeit less sizable reserve accumulation overall by EM reserve managers)," the strategists say.

GRAINS: The US Coast Guard has closed the Mississippi River to shippers, according to an Associated Press report. Some 97 vessels were reported stranded by low water on the river near Greenville, Mississippi, earlier this week, Reuters reported. The US drought has left the river there at its lowest level since 1988, another drought year. Shippers have been loading less per barge in recent weeks to try to have vessels sit higher on the water and avoid grounding. The river is a major vehicle for shipping grains to the Gulf.
