GOLD: Spot gold holds at $1764.25/oz, after trading in a $1756.15
to $1772.89 range. The precious metal topped out at $1787.20 Friday, but
stalled ahead of the 2012 high of $1790.30, seen Feb 29 (day of the
ECB's second three-year LTRO). Analysts prefer to see a clear-cut break
of the psychological $1800 level (Nov 2011 high at $1802.60) before
becoming more bullish. Joni Teves of UBS notes that CFTC data, released
Friday (for positions as per Sept 18), showed that net gold longs
increased by 2.0moz to 28.1mnz, "the highest level since September 6
last year," Teves also notes that speculative account positioning "has
expanded by 13moz since mid-August and now sits at 85% of the all time
high." While not yet "stretched by historical standards," positioning
"is certainly getting closer," she says.
