Russia exported 82,600 metric tons of copper in January-May, 30.2% less than in January-May 2007, the federal customs service reported Monday.

The exported copper was worth $619 million, compared with $720 million a year earlier.

Copper exports to countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States totaled 81,300 tons worth $609.7 million, compared with 116,300 tons worth $708 million in January-May 2007.

China June copper import data shows 12% on-month drop for copper, copper alloy, semifinished products to 173,851 tons. Data closely watched for clues on key Chinese demand, but LME, Shanghai Futures Exchange futures market show little reaction. Continued long liquidation, with some additional new shorts, boosted the funds' net short position in Comex copper futures and options combined in the week through Tuesday, late-Friday CFTC data show. These large non-commercial accounts shed 2,063 long lots and added 51 short lots to close the period net short by 4,519 lots. That was up from the prior period's 2,406-lot net short position, after the funds had liquidated 2,354 long lots and added 936 short ones. In the most recent period, the large commercial accounts stood net long by 7,850. (MWH)

The Comex copper net short position of the funds, or non-commercials, grew during the week to Aug. 26 to its largest level in 15 months mainly due to further long liquidation, late-Friday CFTC data show. These accounts stood net long by 11,225 lots for futures and options combined mainly due to a decline of 1,527 total longs. This is the largest net short position since May 2007 for the funds, which had stood net short by 9,306 in the week to Aug. 19. The large commercial accounts were net long by 17,572 lots
